The application should always be made to the male thread before it enters the female component. Before starting, the threads must be thoroughly cleaned to remove any dirt, rust, grease, or previous sealant remnants, and then completely dried.

The wrapping technique is critical for effectiveness. Begin wrapping the tape one thread down from the open end of the fitting to prevent any pieces from entering the system. The tape must always be wrapped in the same direction as the fitting is tightened, typically clockwise when facing the threaded male end. Wrapping in the wrong direction will cause the tape to unravel during tightening.

Maintain steady tension while wrapping and overlap each layer by approximately half the tape’s width to ensure comprehensive coverage. Tension should be sufficient enough that the defined ridges of the threads remain visible beneath the tape. The recommended number of wraps is generally 2 to 4 times, although thinner tapes may require 4 to 5 wraps. Over-wrapping is detrimental, as excessive tape can prevent a tight connection from forming or, worse, cause the female adapter to crack.

When tightening the joint, caution must be exercised to avoid over-torquing, especially with plastic fittings, as this can lead to the threads cutting the tape or cause cracking. Once a PTFE seal is correctly in place, it is generally not advisable to loosen or move the connection unless a leak is detected, as PTFE does not tolerate being disturbed like other seal types. If a joint is unthreaded for any reason, the used tape must be removed, and a fresh layer reapplied, as PTFE tape is considered a single-use item.

It is important to note that PTFE tape is not suitable for compression fittings, which are designed to achieve a watertight seal solely via a compression nut. Using tape on these threads is counter-productive and can hinder the nut from tightening correctly. For applications where PTFE tape may present a risk of leaks, alternatives such as PTFE or thread sealing cord are available and can create a more resistant and effective seal.
